My open-access book, Demons: Internet Owned Digital Communications, deals with the demons that communicate with the Internet. But demons and other computer software do much more than just dump information. Here I want to combine my close attention to the demons of the world with broader ways of providing computing power and optimizing life today.
Demons are needed to understand modern concerns about original city projects like Google’s Sidewalk Labs in Toronto and recent attention so they can keep an eye on capitalism. The Internet was born during the Cold War. Researchers at the US Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) included computers in their design for an experimental digital interconnect system. Known as the ARPANET, its design evolved into the modern Internet. And these computers, known as Message Interface Processors (IMPs), became the switches, routers, and gateways that make up the core infrastructure of the Internet today.
In integrating computers into commercial applications, the ARPANET has hired demons to better manage our communications. The demons were a functional hive mind that is currently spreading across the ARPANET and is in constant contact with each other and with the first users. Collective personal intelligence has streamlined the flow of concepts in the ARPANET.
ARPANET installed daemons that could better manage communications and, in addition, the optimal network was created automatically by their coordination. As the ARPANET became our Internet, these theoretical issues became public issues left to ISPs.
